Boycott the Stampede Rodeo in Canada

The push to boycott the Stampede rodeo and chuckwagon races is continuing to expand internationally.

A British based animal rights group, which has claimed success for banning fox hunting in the U.K., has joined a number of other organizations targeting the greatest outdoor show on earth.

The League Against Cruel Sports is calling for an end to calf-roping, an event it says it is mistreating animals for the purpose of entertainment.

The group says it has the support of more than 50 MPs who have signed a motion asking Ottawa to improve how animals are treated at the Stampede. It is also asking British travel firms to stop offering vacation packages to the event.

The Vancouver Humane Society, which placed an ad in Calgary newspapers speaking out against the event, is pleased the issue is getting more attention.
"Internationally SPCA's in Britain, the United States, Australia and New Zealand all oppose rodeo. This is not an extreme animal rights position; it's a mainstream animal rights position" says Peter Fricker from the VHS.

A local animal rights group is launching its annual 'Stampede Public Protest' tomorrow afternoon across the street from the Victoria Park LRT Station.
